About 15 years ago, when Free Radical Design went bankrupt and was acquired by Crytek, a movement arose to save TimeSplitters by launching a collection. Crytek was not involved, but approved a fan project to make use of the intellectual property and offered the original TimeSplitters assets. The project went through a thousand and one difficulties, and in 2018, when THQ Nordic acquired TimeSplitters, it decided to respect the agreement with Crytek. Additionally, it allowed the team to use Unreal Engine to remake the game instead of CryEngine.

In recent years, the initiative to recover TimeSplitters has not stopped suffering from problems, something understandable when we talk about an initiative driven by fans where the will and time each person has is everything, but in the end the project has seen the light. Timesplitters Rewind, a remake which brings together the story, maps, modes and challenges of the original TimeSplitters trilogy, is now available for free. Those interested only have to access the official website, download the file and play on PC. It is also possible to run the title on the Steam Deck thanks to support for Proton.

Nearly 200 collaborators have gone through this project over the last decade.

«Rewind is not a remake traditional with three independent executables, but it is a single game that captures, as much as possible, the spirit of the trilogy,» says the development team. Players should keep in mind that TimeSplitters Rewind is launching as an early access project, so there are bugs and missing features. From now on, those responsible for the game will dedicate their efforts to releasing updates to end up offering the most complex and polished title possible.

In its current state, TimeSplitters Rewind includes 28 maps, 20 Arcade game modes, 51 Arcade leagues, Team Elimination game mode (new), 32 challenges, 96 characters, 41 weapons, story mode (online and offline) and Arcade mode with bots (online and offline). Up to 10 players can play online. More maps, characters, modes, and features requested by the community will be added over time. The requirements are very modest: Intel Atom C2750 @2.40 GHz, GTX 760, 8 GB of RAM and 35 GB of hard drive space.
