Players who have the version of Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One (digital) and have resisted paying for the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series version are in luck. Rockstar Games has announced that starting June 18, the Grand Theft Auto V update for next-generation consoles will become free. This offering comes a few months before the release of Grand Theft Auto VI scheduled for November 19.

The version of Grand Theft Auto V for the current generation of consoles went on sale in March 2022 at a reduced price of 9.99 euros on PS5 and 19.99 euros on Xbox Series. Three months later the cost of the game on both consoles rose to 39.99 euros, the price it has maintained until now. Starting June 18, it will no longer be necessary to check out and any user with a copy of Grand Theft Auto V for PS4 or Xbox One will be able to upgrade the game for free to the PS5 or Xbox Series version. On these consoles the game presents a series of graphical and performance improvements that also apply to GTA Online.

GTA V on PS5 and Xbox Series allows you to adjust the experience with the following three options:

  • Fidelity Mode: Native 4K at 30 FPS with ray tracing capabilities. On Xbox Series S the 4K is upscaled.
  • Performance Mode: 4K upscaled and 60 FPS. On Xbox Series S they are 1080p.
  • RT Performance Mode: 4K upscaling, 60 FPS and ray tracing features. Not available on Xbox Series S.

Grand Theft Auto V players can transfer their GTA Online profile from PlayStation 4 or Xbox One to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series from the GTA Online home screen or from the pause menu once they are logged into Rockstar Games on their console. Once progress has been transferred, your profile will still be available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. However, GTA Online progress earned across different consoles will not be synced after the transfer.

On the other hand, the version of Grand Theft Auto V for PC received the PS5 and Xbox Series improvements for free in March 2025. On this platform the game also has exclusive improvements such as ambient occlusion and global illumination based on ray tracing, and support for FSR, DLSS, DirectStorage, the DualSense controller and Dolby Atmos.
