Players who pick up Tales of Xillia Remastered should not expect too much, at least on a graphical level. The title looks better thanks to the fact that it can run on modern hardware at up to 4K resolution and 60 FPS on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC, while on Xbox Series S it is 1440p at 60 FPS. On Nintendo Switch we go down to 1080p in television mode and 720p in portable mode, always at 30 FPS. The gameplay is similar to that of the original Tales of Xillia released in 2011 in Japan for PS3, and in terms of content we have the base game with all the add-ons available.
The new features of Tales of Xillia Remastered are found in the quality of life improvements, which include automatic saving, destination icons for more fluid exploration and early access to the Grados store. We also have the option to disable enemy encounters at any time during the game, an alternative for those who want to focus on the development of the story. Meanwhile, the Dual Raid Linear Motion combat system allows players to team up with allies to launch combo attacks and unlock special support abilities.
The story of Tales of Xillia transports players to the continent of Rieze Maxia, where humans and spirits coexist in harmony. The campaign can be experienced from the point of view of Milla, a mysterious woman accompanied by four powerful spirits, or Jude, an aspiring medical student living a peaceful life in Fennmont, the kingdom's capital. After realizing that spirits and humans are in danger, Milla heads to Fennmont to confirm her suspicions, and when she infiltrates a military research facility she believed responsible for the disappearances, she crosses paths with the young man.
The latest new entry in the Tales of series is 2021's Tales of Arise, a game that two years after its release received the Beyond the Dawn expansion. Bandai Namco has not announced a new title and for now has only confirmed that it has in hand the remaster of Tales of Xillia 2 and another game that has not yet been identified.
