In recent years the news about companies or studies that execute rounds of mass layoffs have been the usual tonic, but not everyone has been seen in this same position. The British company Rebellion Developments has maintained its workforce, a fact that according to its executive director Jason Kingsley is due in large part to the fact that the study of the study has managed to control the scope and cost of its projects, as well as the risk assumed.

«It would be very selfish to say that it is only due to our incredible ability to direct a company,» says Kingsley when PC Gamer asks how rebellion has done to avoid the wave of layoffs that the video game industry has affected after the covid boom. «There is always some luck. I think we control our budgets very carefully. We have notable budgets, millions and millions of sterling pounds, but not hundreds of millions. We always try to make a game that is really good and that has many possibilities of generating benefit. That is what really matters.»

In recent years Rebellion has launched titles such as Zombie Army 4: Dead War, Sniper Elite VR, Sniper Elite 5 and Sniper Elite: Resistance, and right now counts the days to put atomfall on sale, which will be available on March 27 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Game Pass and PC Epic Games Store.

But it is not only about adjusting the budget and measuring the project scale well, but also the preferences of the development team also come into play. «I prefer a small and very good game to a very big one that does not focus on what is really important for the player,» says Kingsley. «We are very professional when controlling the scope and costs. Sometimes we say, guys, this game is too big.»

This precaution when carrying out its games has caused Rebellion to put several sequelae on sale or spin-off of known properties. Kingsley says that the company's goal is that two thirds of its titles are sequelae or franchise deliveries, and the rest more experimental games. However, the Executive acknowledges that they must be very careful with these experiments «because we have a responsibility with team members and staff,» says Kingsley. «We don't want to hire and say goodbye to people all the time.»

Kingsley acknowledges that the wave of layoffs suffered by the «scares» sector. They have not had to make this type of decisions or want to do it, and for this they ensure that they must «maintain a balance.»
