According to data from Alinea Analytics, PlayStation Studios games published on Steam have generated gross revenues of more than $1.5 billion to date. Valve takes 30% of sales, a percentage that drops to 25% after the first $10 million and 20% after $50 million. Taking this into account and applying the percentages to each game based on their income, Sony has received close to $1.2 billion, while Valve has pocketed more than $350 million.
In total, games published by PlayStation Studios on Steam have sold 43 million units. The ranking is led by a wide margin by Helldivers II with 12.7 million copies and gross revenues of $400 million. In second place we have Horizon Zero Dawn, the first major exclusive from PlayStation Studios that came to Steam, with 4.5 million copies and revenues of 170 million dollars, and the podium is completed by God of War with 4.2 million copies sold and nearly 150 million dollars in revenue.
Off the podium we have Spider-Man Remastered, which has 2.7 million copies and 116 million dollars, and Days Gone, which has 3.4 million copies and 108 million dollars.
Alinea Analytics comments that the first PlayStation Studios releases on Steam were experienced in a special way, even as an event, which contributed to the success of Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone and God of War. Now this effect is fading. «All of Sony's big franchises are now available on PC,» says Alinea Analytics. «The audience that was once excited to experience these games for the first time has already been largely served.» This is especially noticeable in the sales of sequels (which also have a smaller potential audience), including Horizon, God of War and Spider-Man.
According to Alinea Analytics, Sony's challenge is to find the right interval between the launch on PlayStation and Steam. Console sales must be protected and at the same time satisfy the PC audience, which increasingly expects more simultaneous releases. The company says that a time frame of between six and twelve months could be in Sony's best interests. However, depending on the evolution of Steam Machine, the situation could change, since Valve's platform could go from being a distribution channel to a competitor.
