Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s new plan includes betting on the company’s main intellectual properties, and one of them is Fallout. According to Jason Schreier in Bloomberg, the studio responsible for carrying out a new Fallout project is Obsidian Entertainment, which is getting to work on this assignment in the midst of the restructuring of the Xbox division. In his case, it has cost him to lose a quarter of the staff, as Kotaku and Bloomberg sources have agreed to reveal.

As part of the restructuring of Xbox, Obsidian Entertainment has canceled several unannounced projects, including the sequel to the role-playing game Avowed whose first installment went on sale in 2025. In its place, the studio will dedicate its resources to a new game in the Fallout universe led by Josh Sawyer, whom more than one will know for having been the director and designer of Fallout: New Vegas, one of the installments of the saga most celebrated by players. Schreier claims that Sawyer was directing a role-playing game with a structure and theme similar to Fallout, but that was not part of the franchise.

Fallout games are always accompanied by good reviews and sales, but the saga has not had a new installment since the launch of Fallout 76 (2018), which, being multiplayer, has never satisfied some fans. The last major game is Fallout 4, which was released in 2015. These long wait times are due to Bethesda Game Studios, the studio behind Fallout, dedicating its resources to other projects. A few years ago I had Starfield in my hands and now The Elder Scrolls VI. In addition, it has not stopped updating Fallout 76, a title that more than 23 million players have played.

The only Fallout game not developed by Bethesda Game Studios has been Fallout: New Vegas (2010), which was conceived by Obsidian Entertainment under the direction of Josh Sawyer. Now the creators of Fallout: New Vegas have the opportunity to make another Fallout game. Obsidian Entertainment will have the collaboration of Bethesda Game Studios, which a few years ago said that Fallout 5 would arrive after The Elder Scrolls VI. It seems that we will see something related to the Fallout universe sooner than expected.

Schreier explains that the Avowed sequel takes advantage of the universe and technology already created to have a shorter development cycle, but it is a project that does not fit into Sharma’s strategy. Even so, some employees will continue working on this title until they can join new projects such as Fallout, since there is hope that one day the game can be revived. In addition, Obsidian Entertainment continues to develop additional content for The Outer Worlds 2 and, together with Eidos-Montreal, is working on Grounded 2.
