Compatibility with the games of the previous generation is a very attractive feature in a console, especially when the predecessor has been in the market for eight years and has a catalog with more than 15,000 games. This is the case of Switch 2, so Nintendo dedicates a space on its website to talk about the retrocompatibility that practically covers the entire Switch library. In addition, the company has revealed that some of its games will receive an update to improve its performance in the new console.

Of the 122 Nintendo games available on Switch and the more than 15,000 developed by third-partythere is only one that cannot be played in Switch 2: Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit. The reason is as simple as the new console cannot be inserted into the viewfinder. The rest of the catalog is compatible, but some titles present problems. In this section there are two categories: games that have problems to start (see list) and games that can be started but present compatibility problems (see list). Between the two lists there are just over 100 games, a really low figure if we take into account the entire catalog available.

Because Nintendo and the rest of the companies continue to improve the compatibility of Switch 2 with switch games, players can expect the retrocompatibility problems to be solved.

Switch games work better on Switch 2 thanks to their hardware, so the simple act of executing them in the new console can reduce loading time and offer more stable performance. In addition, when playing on Switch 2 there is the option to use GameChat (which requires Nintendo Switch online). From here, it will depend on each developing or not an update to take advantage of the Switch 2 processing power to allow the games to be reproduced to greater resolution and with an improved image frequency. Game data is transferred using the Nintendo account.

Nintendo has confirmed that it will launch updates for some compatible switch games that improve performance or add support for functions such as Gameshare. Switch 2 players can download these updates by connecting their internet console. The selected games are:

  • ARMS
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
  • Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
  • The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
  • Game Builder Garage
  • New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
  • Scarlet Pokémon
  • Purple Pokémon
  • Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain

Another way to improve a switch game on Switch 2 is through a Switch 2 Edition version. In this case it is a payment package that in addition to improving performance adds content and functions that can only be used in the new console. In this category we have Zelda Breath of the Wild, Zelda Tears of the Kingdom or Metroid Prime 4. It is unknown to what price will the Switch 2 Edition improvement packages have. We do know that Nintendo Switch subscribers online + Expansion package that have a copy of the aforementioned deliveries from Zelda will receive the Switch 2 Edition without additional cost.
