Call of the Elder Gods sets its story in 1957, more than two decades after the events narrated in the first installment Call of the Sea. This time the protagonists are new but they are not far from the universe of the saga. They are Professor Harry Everhart and student Evangeline Drayton, who has recently been tormented by a series of vivid dreams related to an artifact found a decade ago. These dreams are carried out by a voice that makes requests in an incomprehensible language and have taken Evangeline to places whose alien architecture sports a Lovecraftian aesthetic.
Professor Everhart has a reputation as a scholar, so Evangeline turns to him to try to understand her dreams. In the end they both meet at a mansion in New England. This encounter will lead to a narrative puzzle adventure that will take the two protagonists beyond the halls of Miskatonic University and the mansion’s libraries, to visit places as diverse as the red sands of the Australian desert, desolate wastelands and supernatural cities. The goal is to find answers, but along the way Harry and Evangeline will reveal ancient secrets throughout six chapters.
At a gameplay level, Call of the Elder Gods maintains the object puzzles and first-person observation of Call of the Sea, but «with more depth» and the possibility of switching between Harry and Evangeline to solve puzzles through time and space. Out of the Blue Games offers a wide variety of puzzles, thus preventing players from feeling like they are always using the same solution. Some puzzles are quicker and simpler, while others require complex solutions that demand the player. This experience can be customized with clues, icons, and a journal.
Call of the Elder Gods is a direct sequel to Call of the Sea, but Out of the Blue Games ensures that both games can be enjoyed independently. Players who have played the first installment will quickly recognize the gameplay and logic of the environmental puzzles, while on a narrative level they will find connections to the history of the Everhart family. Consequently, it is advisable to complete Call of the Sea before taking on Call of the Elder Gods, but not required or necessary. Anyone who wants to take a look at Call of the Elder Gods will find a demo in stores on all platforms.
