Possibly motivated by the appearance of a large number of rumors, id Software has published a statement on X where he acknowledges that his staff has been affected by Xbox cuts, and without saying the number he explains that the layoffs have been distributed among several teams. Despite this, id Software assures that «we have the necessary personnel to create the games and technology for which we are known.» It is understood that the technology is id Tech, the graphics engine that has powered Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein since the late 90s. It has also been used by MachineGames in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
«Today’s team is about the same size as when we developed Doom 2016 […]», continues id Software. The Doom installment that went on sale in 2016 was the first stone of a highly valued trilogy where we also find Doom Eternal (2020) and Doom: The Dark Ages (2025). «We are going to continue creating great games and the technology that has defined us for the last 35 years […]»adds id Software. The studio invites players to QuakeCon 2026, which will be held from August 6 to 9. This edition will bring together for the first time since 1996 John Carmack, Adrian Carmack, Tom Hall and John Romero, the founders of id Software.
What does id Software work on?
After the release of the Revelations expansion for Doom: The Dark Ages, id Software is not aware of any projects. However, information has recently emerged about some of the ideas that have been put on the table. As reported by Gamesbeat, the studio has explored the option of developing an original game codenamed Fury, which offers action-style gun fu like the movie John Wick. This title has elements of science fiction, film noir, and a modern aesthetic, but it seems that it has not been greenlit. Perhaps this is because Xbox does not want to move away from its main franchises.
id Software has also considered developing a Perfect Dark game, a saga that has not had a new installment since 2025. The property is free after the closure of The Initiative and the cancellation of the Perfect Dark game that they had been working on for six years. On the other hand, there have been proposals to include multiplayer, cooperative and more content to Doom, as well as a project known as Ironwood that focuses on survival in a world similar to that of Westworld. It is unknown if any of these projects have come to fruition or will go forward.
For now the only thing that is certain is that Xbox wants to focus on its big properties and id Software knows two very well: Doom and Quake. It is also responsible for Wolfenstein, but the latest installments (and it seems the next) are from MachineGames, which also has the id Tech engine on hand. It is really unknown what game id Software is developing. What we do know is that this year Quake celebrates its 30th anniversary.
