PlayStation Studios and Sony look for games as a service in companies third-partyand it turns out that they have them at home. A good example is Gran Turismo 7, which three years after its launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 continues to receive content on a regular basis and registers more than 2 million active users per month, as revealed by Kazunori Yamauchi, head of Polyphony Digital and producer of the Gran Turismo franchise.

«Gran Turismo 7 has been on the market for several years, but even so active players exceed 2 million, and new users continue to increase,» Yamauchi commented in a round table that took place during the Gran Turismo World Series 2025 World Finals held in Fukuoka (Japan). Yamauchi adds that the situation in which Gran Turismo 7 finds itself is the best in the entire saga, since never before have they managed to retain so many players several years after launch. They also manage to add new parishioners.

Yamauchi attributes this phenomenon to the evolution of Polyphony Digital's relationship with the community and its change in the way it supports games in the long term. This strategy began with Gran Turismo Sport and has been consolidated with Gran Turismo 7. Since its launch in March 2022, Gran Turismo 7 has received dozens of updates that have added new vehicles and tracks, as well as other content and improvements. With Spec III, the latest update, the title added eight cars and two tracks.

The Spec III update arrived on the same day as Power Pack, the first paid content for Gran Turismo 7. This €29.99 add-on includes 50 new races in 20 themed categories, racing challenges with weekend-long formats, GT Sophy 3.0 and a bundle of 5,000,000 in-game credits.

Gran Turismo is one of the most iconic PlayStation franchises. It is a saga that has appeared on all Sony consoles except for PS Vita and has more than 100 million units sold. The copies shipped for each delivery are unknown, but it is certain that Gran Turismo 7 is one of the ones that adds the most. In addition, Gran Turismo is successful in the esports sector, according to Polyphony Digital, an event like the Gran Turismo World Series reaches 8 million broadcasts, and has even reached the cinema with a film directed by Neill Blomkamp that raised $122 million.
