Not long ago, graphics engines were presented with technical demos that sometimes ended up becoming a game. They were demonstrations to teach developers and players what a graphical environment was capable of, at least on paper and in expert hands. This custom has been left behind with Unreal Engine 6, which Epic Games has shown through an updated version of the game free-to-play Rocket League. We’ll see if there is a more elaborate and traditional technical demonstration in the coming days.

Be that as it may, the first look at Unreal Engine 6 with footage captured in real time is important for the video game industry, which for years has decided to massively embrace the Epic Games tool. Today, there are few studios that have their own engine and most use Unreal Engine, a powerful, multi-platform solution that all developers know. Unity has been left behind and its controversies with the business model have not helped it, while Godot, a free and open source engine, has an outlet among some games indies como Slay the Spire 2.

For Rocket League, the jump to Unreal Engine 6 presents a new era, one that Fortnite and its entire ecosystem will possibly also enter.

A is teaser Unreal Engine 6 lacks technical details. Epic Games has shown the trailer for the new version of the engine during the Rocket League Championship Series 2026: Paris Major and has not offered any information about the technological advances of its graphic solution. In May 2025 Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, said that Unreal Engine 6 had among its main objectives to offer a more accessible development environment and greater scalability. It also wants to deliver everything necessary to create the game and distribute it on any platform. Sweeney commented that preliminary versions would arrive in 2 or 3 years, a schedule that may have been advanced.

Unreal Engine 5 was presented in May 2020 with a real-time demo running on PlayStation 5, a console that would end up hitting stores in November of that year. Shortly after, Sony invested $250 million in Epic Games. In December 2021, Epic Games launched the Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience technology demo with an announcement at The Game Awards gala. Perhaps on this occasion something has been saved for the Summer Game Fest 2026 which will be held on June 5 at 11:00 p.m. CEST.
