In its beginnings, Doom was a game with a tremendously popular multiplayer mode to which the birth of the word Deathmatch is attributed to define the all against all. However, over time the situation has taken a notable turn, to the point that ID Software has decided that Doom: The Dark Ages must completely give up the multiplayer mode to focus all its resources on the mode for a player. In return, the new installment will offer the one according to the development team is the best and greatest franchise campaign.
«We make that decision from the beginning to completely dedicate ourselves to the campaign,» says Marty Stratton. «It is our biggest, extensive and epic campaign, and we are very happy with the decision. It has been incredible to have the team focused only on polishing and finishing the campaign.» Centering the resources on the campaign has allowed ID Software to move forward with ideas that in previous deliveries had remained in the inkwell. One of them is the ATLAN, huge bipedal war machines used by the Night Sentinels, a kind of warriors to which the Doom Slayer belongs, in its fight against the forces of hell.
As we saw yesterday at the Developer Direct 2025, the Atlan that appears in Doom: The Dark Ages is not a testimonial or minor element. To this experience aboard a mech the size of a building with which you fight against large demons like Titans, you have to add a cyber dragon that spits fire and carries a machine gun. Both ATLAN and the dragon have their own skills set, combat systems and minijefes. In addition, dedicating resources to the campaign has also allowed to offer a better narrative.
Regarding the future of Doom after the launch of The Dark Age, Hugo Martin says that this delivery «is not designed to be the end of something.» With this the creative director does not mean that in Software they are already working on the following game. Martin comments that they are currently fully focused on Doom: The Dark Ages, which still has a few weeks left and after launch an additional campaign, but insists that we are not facing a point and final. «I like to make doom games,» says Martin. «I would have no problem continuing to do them for a long time.»
