The launch of Cyberpunk 2077 will go down in history as one of the biggest technical fiascos, but the books will also say that CD Projekt Red managed to turn it around with a roadmap for redemption filled with patches, updates and improvements. The results have ended up arriving, and a good example of this is that Cyberpunk 2077 has managed to sell more than 40 million copies between the PlayStation, Xbox, Switch 2 and PC versions.

The 40 million units shipped by Cyberpunk 2077 as of July 3, 2026 are compared to the 35 million in November 2025. That is 5 million copies in eight months, a notable figure for a game that went on sale six years ago. CD Projekt Red’s RPG began its journey in stores with 8 million units reserved, which a couple of weeks later transformed into 13 million copies sold. This number was reached despite the fact that the PlayStation Store removed the game and together with the Xbox Store relaxed their refund policy due to the poor performance of the title on PS4 and Xbox One, respectively.

Since the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in December 2020, patches and millions of copies have been sold. In September 2022 the game reached 20 million units and in October 2023, just after the release of the Phantom Liberty expansion, it reached 25 million. Phantom Liberty has also been a commercial success, as demonstrated by the 8 million units sold by November 2024. At that time Cyberpunk 2077 had accumulated 30 million copies.

CD Projekt Red is currently working on four games and one of them is the new installment of Cyberpunk 2077, which for now is called Cyberpunk 2. This is the second project to which it allocates more resources. The first is The Witcher 4, the first installment of a trilogy starring Ciri that according to the Polish studio’s schedule should be completed in six years. To all this, it is worth remembering that The Witcher III: Wild Hunt has sold 65 million copies and has a third expansion on the way that will arrive in 2027. The add-on is called Songs of the Past and details will be known this summer.

Finally, we cannot forget that the Cyberpunk 2077 universe has been expanded with the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners by Studio Trigger, whose second season (independent of the first) will be available this fall on Netflix.
