The classic shoot ’em up Truxton developed by Toaplan will have a third installment called Truxton Extreme, which will be available on July 30 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam and GOG in exchange for 22.99 euros. The publisher Clear River Games will also put a physical edition on sale for 34.99 euros on PS5 and Xbox Series and 44.99 euros on Switch 2. Behind this project we have the Japanese studio Tatsujin, the heir company of Toaplan that has been part of the Embracer Group since 2022.

Truxton Extreme is a new installment of the Truxton saga, a shoot ’em up of vertical displacement that after more than 30 years decides to embrace three dimensions. «Truxton Extreme is now fully rendered in 3D but maintaining the iconic design of the saga,» says the development team. At the gameplay level we have a proposal that promises to adapt to both veterans and newbies, and where the main objective remains to destroy hordes of invading aliens aboard spaceships equipped with all types of weapons, including the powerful Truxton ray that gives the game its name.

What does not change in Truxton Extreme compared to the first installment in 1988 and the second in 1992 is the participation of composer Masahiro Yuge, who returns to be in charge of a soundtrack composed of reinterpreted themes and totally new music. Yuge was also a programmer during his time at Toaplan.

Truxton Extreme will offer players a story mode with three characters and a narrative that progresses through an animated manga series. For the more traditional there is an Arcade mode, while the Team mode allows you to play with a friend sharing the number of lives and the score. The game also has an Arena mode where the objective is to score points as many as possible, a Training mode to test both skills and reflexes and a Tutorial to learn all the concepts of the title.

Tatsujin, the studio owned by Embracer Group that is responsible for Truxton Extreme, has the rights to a good part of Toaplan's intellectual properties and its executive director and founder is the aforementioned Masahiro Yuge, programmer and composer of the Truxton saga. Tatsujin was the first Japanese studio to buy Embracer Group and is currently part of an operating group called Freemode.
