Splash Damage cancels Transformers: Reactivate and announces layoffs

Splash Damage (Dirty Bomb, Gears Tactics and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory) has announced that Transformers: Reactivate, an online cooperative game announced in December 2022, has been canceled. This decision comes accompanied by changes at the Tencent-owned studio, including a reallocation of resources to other projects and a restructuring that will reduce the size of the workforce. The number of those fired has not been revealed.

In a statement published in XSplash Damage simply comments that it «has made the decision to conclude development of Transformers: Reactivate.» The Tencent subsidiary does not say anything about the reasons that led it to scrap a project that had been in development for more than two years and that was presented with a cinematic trailer at The Game Awards 2022 gala. For those who didn't know it, Transformers: Reactivate was an online action game for 1 to 4 players for consoles and PC that was going to explore a new story in the Transformers universe. «The greatest threat to humanity is already here… and has won. Now, we depend on the Autobots,» said the text that accompanied the cinematic with which the title was presented. At the time Splash Damage even said that Transformers: Reactivate «marks the beginning of a new era» for the company.

Splash Damage also comments that Hasbro, owner of Transformers, has been an «incredible partner» who has «supported us every step of the way.» Likewise, the company appreciates the support of the players. Regarding the layoffs, the number of those affected is unknown. «Not being able to launch the game is painful, but it is even more painful to have to say goodbye to friends and colleagues,» says Splash Damage. Bulkhead was also involved in the development of Transformers: Reactivate and between both studios they had a staff of 550 people.
